La Cocina has a little stand in the Ferry Building just inside the south door on Embarkadero.
This sign caught my attention. I did a double-take, went back and shot these photos.
I remember back in the 60’s there were novelty insects on the market – chocolate covered ants, rattlesnake and fried caterpillars. They were designed to take to a party for a laugh and a dare. These, however, are for real protein and for snacking.
Joslyn asked if I wanted to try one … I hesitated, but gave in, so YES, I did try one of the Spicy Bugitos. Frankly, it tasted like a crispy french fry with a little chili powder. They have a variety of choices, and I’ll bet they’re all good. Seriously.
We humans eat a lot of crazy things, like chicken embryos, AKA eggs, and all kinds of animal parts, so why not insects???
La Cocina’s mission is to cultivate low income food by providig affordable commercial kitchen space, technical assistance and access to market opportunities. Bugs are not their main thing, but I “get it”. Protein is the key and again, why not? Check out this stand and say HI to Joslyn.
