Critical Mass in San Francisco
After the work day ends, on the last Friday of every month, thousands of bicyclists meet near the foot of Market Street, and then decide where to take the pack … through downtown at a nice, leisurely pace – blocking traffic, sometimes for an hour. Generally it only effects a small part of downtown, and only for 10 – 15 minutes.
The first Critical Mass was over 15 years ago, and started with 4 dozen riders. The purpose is to make more people aware of using bicycle transportation, instead of cars. One of the original riders, Joe Pomerantz has never owned a car and still is part of Critical Mass.
Today, Critical Mass rides are found in over 300 cities worldwide, including London, Austin, Los Angeles, San Diego, Berkeley, Chicago, Santa Cruz, Seattle, Berlin, and Rio de Janeiro. The main goal is to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution.
I’m not sure what’s going on with this video, but it seems to need two clicks to get going???
