Ola and the Team
Ola Fendert and his gang has at it again with their latest endeavor called Local. I went last Friday, and was surprised it was so busy already. All the tables were filled, most of the stool counters were too. Luckily we got a spot overlooking the wood fire oven and the kitchen for a little exhibition cooking, which is something I always enjoy.
The food is primarily Italian, but not the same old boring standards. There are seasonal pizzas, and I nearly ordered the fig and goat cheese one, but decided to go back again later and have it. Instead, I had the duck, which was really great – placed on mashed potatoes, it was tender and tasty, with a rich demiglace over it all. This is not a dish for a light eater, but perfect for a cold night and the walk home after.
I was also surprised that the prices are so reasonable. At this writing, most entrees are $18ish. Not only is the wine list good, but they also have a huge variety, and a shop in front to do a little wine tasting … and buying.
The decor is simple, practical, yet has touches of elegance. The silverware is old and doesn’t match, but who cares, it’s a fun twist that reflects the personality of the people behind the scenes.
Stop by pizza Sundays – all you can eat for $12 … 5.30PM. Local Kitchen & Wine Merchant is at 330 1st Street, which is near First and Folsom … See the map below the photos. It’s only 3 blocks So. of Market Street and well worth the short walk. They’re also opened for Sunday Brunch.
OH, and if you like the music at Oola, you’ll love it here. Both restaurants have hired Musync, San Francisco music licensing company to orchestrate the playlists that are used to add layers of coolness to both restaurants.
Tell them you saw them on the Quirky San Francisco Blog.
