My Dutch Bike Store 02 640x360 My Dutch Bike

This shop is quirky, but it shouldn’t be. My Dutch Bike store on Market Street sells heavy duty bikes. Even though the primary stock is handmade utility Dutch bikes, they also carry a line of unique German bikes – Retrovelo. They are all beautifully crafted and generally over-built, which means, “lasts a lifetime” and “nearly indestructible”. They’re heavy duty and meant for pleasure riding or serious work. Since they’re a bit heavier than most, level surfaces are best, but they do boast gears, which helps a little.

Amsterdam is considered the bike capital of the world because of the high percentage of people who use bikes as their main mode of transportation – 40% actually. I’ve read that Amsterdam claims 750,000 people and 700,000 bicycles.

Here’s an interesting link to the top 11 bicycle cities in the world. Guess what? San Francisco is #8!!! Link to the top 11 bicycle cities in the world.

BTW, on the last Friday of each month, a HUGE group of bicyclists gather to intentionally block traffic throughout the city. It started here in 1922, but now takes place simultaneously in 300 cities worldwide. The starting place changes from month-to-month and the route is never the same. Here’s a video of one event I caught on the way home from work (give it a second to load or click again … it’s funky to get it started … not sure why?).

Just a quick post from my phone. If you need a chocolate fix, a current Hello Magazine, or a pack of Dunhill smokes (God forbid), then Fog City News is definitely the place to stop. Adam Smith is the owner who will make sure you leave his classy, spotless shop happy. He keeps it stocked with a unique selection of chocolates you can’t find just everywhere. His collection of magazines ranges from normal to obscure. Stop and tell him you found him on QuirkySanFrancisco.com.

It’s between the American Express office and a Starbucks … at 455 Market Street. There’s a streetcar stop there too. How perfect is that?

Sorry about this photo … the sun wasn’t cooperating. Hopefully, I can re-shoot it soon.

I just spent some time with Al, owner of Al’s Attire, a North Beach institution. What a great guy that everyone loves knowing. We had coffee at CafĂ© Trieste, and he seems to know everyone there and on in shops and restaurants along the way.

He’s got a list of famous customers a mile long and he treats it like nothing. “Oh yeah, Carlos Santana was in on Saturday for some shoes and a few other things.” He doesn’t brag, but I heard Tom Waits and Rob Schneider’s names too. There’s more, but that’s not the reason to check out Al’s at 1314 Grant in North Beach. His clothes are amazing and he really knows what he’s doing. He’s a hands on guy and gives customers the attention they deserve. I think the key is, he really loves what he does, and it shows.

If you need something original, he’ll help pull it together. Or, if you need to have a pair of antique shoes re-produced, Al’s the guy. He creates bags, hats, belts, shirts, suits, evening gowns … you name it. You’ll just have to go look. When you do, tell him you saw him on Quirky San Francisco.
