My Dutch Bike Store 02 640x360 My Dutch Bike

This shop is quirky, but it shouldn’t be. My Dutch Bike store on Market Street sells heavy duty bikes. Even though the primary stock is handmade utility Dutch bikes, they also carry a line of unique German bikes – Retrovelo. They are all beautifully crafted and generally over-built, which means, “lasts a lifetime” and “nearly indestructible”. They’re heavy duty and meant for pleasure riding or serious work. Since they’re a bit heavier than most, level surfaces are best, but they do boast gears, which helps a little.

Amsterdam is considered the bike capital of the world because of the high percentage of people who use bikes as their main mode of transportation – 40% actually. I’ve read that Amsterdam claims 750,000 people and 700,000 bicycles.

Here’s an interesting link to the top 11 bicycle cities in the world. Guess what? San Francisco is #8!!! Link to the top 11 bicycle cities in the world.

BTW, on the last Friday of each month, a HUGE group of bicyclists gather to intentionally block traffic throughout the city. It started here in 1922, but now takes place simultaneously in 300 cities worldwide. The starting place changes from month-to-month and the route is never the same. Here’s a video of one event I caught on the way home from work (give it a second to load or click again … it’s funky to get it started … not sure why?).

I’ve passed by this clever museum too many times … waiting for the right time. I work near there; so it’s close and easily put off. Darn. I wish I’d gone in long ago. It’s filled with historical cartoons that have been enjoyed over the years, as well as featured cartoons and artists which change; so check the Web site for details: www.cartoonart.org. When you visit the museum, be sure to watch the video – a collection of variations of style and ages. It’s a little bonus and a lot of fun. Naturally, there’s no photography inside the museum. It’s right downtown and easy to find … only a block off Market Street (see the map below).

Well, some things never change and some things continue to change, like the Bay To Breakers annual run/walk/dance/crawl from Downtown San Francisco (a few blocks from the bay) to the Pacific Ocean. It’s a very doable distance for most people and I think everyone should do it at least once, in the name of tradition. There are serious runners, serious walkers, causes, corporate groups, people who just want to be crazy, people who just like to drink, naked people, and on and on. You will see EVERY type of person you can imagine. You’ll also see a collection of costuming – inventive, funny, tongue-in-cheek, stupid and non-existent. It’s a wild and crazy event that reflects the true diversity of our wonderful city. Watch and enjoy it all.
