Hasbro’s board game, Candy Land had a birthday today (Aug. 21, 2009). To celebrate, they turned the world’s most famous crooked street, Lombard Street in San Francisco, into a board path with bright colors, markers and kids. What a great event to celebrate the game’s 60th year … and pull in a bit of publicity. Great idea!
Here’s another bike ride you might love. It’s really not a difficult ride and is more about the fun of it all, getting out on the water, having a little lunch and getting some exercise … and maybe a walk on the beach as a bonus.
Start by taking the ferry to Angel Island, which usually leaves from the Ferry Building, but check schedules to make sure. The Website is also a bit confusing; so be sure and double check everything … schedules change too.
If you need to rent a bike, it’ll be easier to make your way down to Pier 41, where you can nearly always catch the ferry to Angel Island, and there’s a Blazing Saddles bike rental shop there, OR, you can wait until you get to Angel Island and rent a bike there. I didn’t compare prices; so check to make sure. Then, you can board the ferry wherever it’s convenient and just have fun without the baggage of the bike … there and back. If you want a truly quirky way to get around the island, try a Segway. We opted for a bike ride this trip, but next time. I’ll give the Segway a shot. It looks like fun.
AND, at the end of the ride, stop by Il Fornaio on Battery Street for an Affogado (espresso poured over ice cream and topped with whipped cream). YUM!
Rubio’s started in San Diego about 30 years ago. I first ate fish tacos in Ensanada, Mexico, which is about an hour and a half drive south of San Diego. Most of the stands serve exactly the same thing, only varying the salsa. I learned the recipe from a street vender there, which turned out not gourmet ingredients. The batter for the fish is just pancake batter. On a tortilla, with the fish is merely chopped cabbage. The white sauce is just mayonaise mixed with a little milk. Now that it sounds borderline disgusting, you’ll have to try them to believe there’re any good. People drive from San Diego for those little fishy delights. Being down by the docks, ads a romantic air, and the fact they used to be 25 cents each, didn’t hurt!
Well, Rubio saw the opportunity and opened one, then another and another. While his recipe is all heavenly,
Stuff. The only one here is in the mall on Market street, near Powell. Don’t judge by the fact that it’s in a mall, it’s good. Order the Pesky Combo.
