If you’re plannig a trip here (or live here), you might want to pick up a book titled “Stairway Walks of San Francisco” (I’ve got it listed here on the site … from Amazon). It’s filled with 15 or so walks, all over the city, complete with the time each one takes, the level of difficulty, maps and detailed directions – very helpful. We tend to keep going on the same ones and this is one of our favorites. It takes you up to Coit Tower and back down to Battery Street, near Levi Plaza. This one takes you up the side of what seems like a cliff, through a collection of hillside homes that have no other access, other then the stairs you’ll use on this walk. I’m not sure how people manage to move furniture in or out … you’ll see what I mean when you go. Also, the story about the The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill started here, and they still frequent this normally quiet little hillside neighborhood.

This area is perfectly safe, even at night, and when you get to the top, you’ll have a 360 degree (almost) view of the city. The Coit Tower photo was taken during a special event – an outdoor performance art project – someone was screening images onto the tower. It was very interesting, but it was really cold that night and we didn’t stick around for the whole performance.

Swan Oyster Depot is one crazy, but tasty place to get good seafood in the city. The atmosphere is just about zero, but the food is constantly fresh and very good. My favorite is the combo salad with fresh cracked crab, shrimp and prawns on a simple iceberg lettuce base with a good 1000 island/louie dressing – simple, but seafood that can’t get much better. The chowder is also quite good – it’s not that gloppy stuff that most places serve that’s loaded with far too many potatoes. To get in, usually have to stand in line … sometimes for a half hour or more, but you can have wine or beer while you wait. At some point, you’ll be standing behind someone sitting on an old stool at the counter (there are no tables). When they finish, you can sit down. Somehow it all works out fine. The guys working the counter are all a bit smart ass types, but in a good mood (probably because they’re all making big money, as the place isn’t exactly cheap), but it IS good. No credit cards; so make sure you have cash.

This is a great trip and not as difficult as it might sound. You can rent bikes all over the city, but Blazing Saddles Bike Rentals has a shop at Pier 39. Take any street car (The F Line) down Market Street toward the Ferry Building, and it’ll take you right to Pier 39. Rent the bikes there and they’ll give you a map with directions over the bridge and to Sausalito, a quaint little town with a lot of over-priced shops filled with things you don’t need. There is a burger place that’s always got a line out the door. They’re good and worth the wait. Then take a ferry back to drop off your bike and it’s a nice half day trip. You can also rent bikes near Folsom and 4th and ride all the way down the Embarcadero, which is nice too, but takes a little longer. You be the judge.
